If you drive anything bigger than a compact car, you already know the pain of watching those numbers spin.
So when I heard Save Mart was running the biggest fuel deal ever in its history, knocking up to a full dollar off every gallon, I actually paid attention. This is not some fake “up to” number that really means two cents. It is a real dollar, and if you shop where you already shop, it is close to free money. Here is exactly how it works and how to grab it before it disappears.
How the Dollar-Off Deal Actually Works
Save Mart, the grocery chain out of Modesto, California, is letting Rewards Members redeem up to $1 off per gallon at participating Shell stations. It runs from July 15, 2026 through September 15, 2026, timed to catch summer road trips.
The math is simple. You earn 1 point for every $1 you spend on groceries. Every 100 points equals 10 cents off per gallon. Stack up 1,000 points and you get the whole dollar. The part that makes this deal special: normally Save Mart caps you at redeeming 100 points per fill-up, so just a dime off. During this promo, you can cash in all 1,000 points at once for the full dollar. That is the piece most people miss.
One more number to keep in mind. The dollar-off applies to up to 20 gallons per fill-up. Top off a 20-gallon tank and that is $20 knocked off in a single stop. Not bad for buying the groceries you were going to buy anyway.
You Don’t Need an App to Cash In
This is the part I love. No fumbling with a paper coupon. No downloading yet another app that eats your phone storage and pings you at 9 p.m. You just punch in your registered Save Mart Rewards phone number at the pump and the savings come off on their own. It is the same 1-point-per-dollar setup most stores use, minus the hassle.
Both Save Mart Rewards Members and Lucky Rewards Members qualify. Getting Platinum is not hard for a regular driver. Shell gives you the status after filling up 12 times with regular gas, or just 6 times with their premium V-Power. Each fill has to be at least 10 gallons. If you already stop at Shell often, you might have it and not even know.

Signing up through their current offer gets you 10 cents off your first fill-up, 20 cents off the second, and 30 cents off the third, as long as all three happen within 60 days. Pair that with your grocery dollar and you are stacking savings like a coupon nerd, minus the scissors.
Watch Those Points Before They Vanish
Points do not sit around forever, and this trips up a lot of shoppers. Save Mart points expire on the last day of the third calendar month after the month you earned them. So points earned in June are gone by September 30. Earn them in July and you have until October 31.
The lesson is timing. Do not hoard points hoping to build one giant tank of savings six months out. Shop regularly, keep an eye on your balance, and cash in during the promo window while you can grab the full dollar. Not Near a Save Mart? Other Chains Do This Too
Save Mart mostly lives in California and northern Nevada, with most of its roughly 79 branded stores in the Central Valley and the Bay Area. If you are reading this from Ohio or Georgia, you are out of luck on this exact deal. But almost every big grocery chain runs a version of the same thing, and plenty hit that same dollar ceiling.
Kroger just expanded its program so points now work for both gas and groceries. You save 10 cents per gallon for every 100 points, up to $1 off on as much as 35 gallons. That is up to $35 in a single fill-up. Kroger’s family is huge too, with Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, and Harris Teeter all counting.
Albertsons For U members earn a point per dollar and can redeem up to $1 per gallon on up to 25 gallons at participating Chevron, Texaco, and Albertsons stations. Stop & Shop and Giant do the same through Shell, and Hy-Vee ties its Fuel Saver tags to pump savings. Out east, Giant Eagle’s myPerks can build all the way to a free 30-gallon tank if you really pile up. The full lineup of chains is longer than most people realize.
The Gas Station Itself Might Owe You a Dollar
You do not even need a grocery card to score a dollar off right now. Chevron and Texaco are running a new member offer that hands you a full $1 off per gallon on up to five separate fill-ups. You just have to be new to their rewards program and sign up between June 30 and September 30, 2026.
Do the math on that. Five fill-ups at a dollar off, on a decent-size tank, can add up to $30 or more for basically nothing. The unused discounts expire 90 days after you make your account, so do not sit on them. This one runs anywhere those stations operate, which makes it a solid backup if no grocery deal reaches your town.
Sometimes Cheap Gas Just Beats Points
I will say the quiet part out loud. Chasing rewards is great, but sometimes a station that is just plain cheaper wins with no hoops at all. Costco is still the first name people think of, and one review across 13 U.S. cities found its gas ran 11 to 55 cents cheaper per gallon than nearby stations.
