I know that sounds like a plot from a heist movie. It isn’t. Researchers proved it could be done back in 2008, TV news crews have pulled it off on camera, and the tools have only gotten cheaper since. Between AI and cheap 3D printers, this has gone from a lab experiment to something a regular crook can do. If you leave your keys sitting out or post them online, you are giving away more than you realize. Here is how it works and, more important, what you can do about it today.

How a Photo Turns Into a Working Key

The grooves on your key have a name. Locksmiths call it the “bitting.” It is just the pattern of cuts along the blade, and each cut has a specific depth. Most American house keys have five or six cuts, spaced at even intervals. String those depths together in order and you get the bitting code. That short string of numbers, plus the brand of the key, is basically all anyone needs to make a copy.

The clever part is that a person does not have to eyeball it anymore. Software does the measuring. Computer scientists at UC San Diego built a program called Sneakey that lines up a key in a photo, measures how deep each cut goes, and spits out the code. It works from almost any angle. In most of their tests, they produced a correct, working key within four guesses. That is not a fluke. That is a system doing what it was designed to do.

They Do Not Even Need to Be Close

Here is the part that really got my attention. The same research team decoded a key from a photo taken from a rooftop almost 200 feet away with a telephoto lens. Your keys sitting on a patio table, on the roof of your car while you load groceries, on a coffee shop table by the window. All of it is fair game to someone with a decent zoom.

The one trick the software needs is a sense of scale. To measure the cuts in real inches, the program wants a reference object of known size right next to the key, like a ruler or a common coin. That is easy to arrange if the thief already has your keys in hand for a minute. It is also why a quarter or dime happening to sit near your keys in a photo is worse than it looks. The point is simple: treat a picture of your key the same way you would treat a picture of your credit card.

They cropped out one house key, uploaded the image to a duplication website, and about a week later a copied key showed up in the mail. It opened the front door of a home on the first try.

The same crew walked through a crowded park in New York City and found key rings sitting out everywhere. On cafe tables. On benches. On laps. Every single one was one quick snapshot away from being copied. Nobody was watching their keys, because who thinks of a key as sensitive? That is exactly the blind spot thieves count on.

The Copy Machine at the Corner Store

You have probably walked past one of those self-service key kiosks. They sit inside places like 7-Eleven, some grocery stores, and drugstores. They are handy, and honestly for a spare house key they are fine. The problem is how much more they can do now. One of these machines copied an apartment building fob for a reporter for about $25, and it can clone the RFID cards and fobs that get you into offices and apartment lobbies.

Some of these services also store your key data in the cloud so you can print another copy at any location later. Convenient, sure. Plenty of kiosks and online services will copy a key marked that way without asking for proof that you are allowed to. There is no law forcing a machine to check. The stamp stops honest people. It does nothing to a thief.

A good locksmith will refuse to cut a random key from a random photo, and they follow real rules about it. But the whole point is that bad actors do not go to the careful locksmith. They go to the machine or the website that does not ask questions. The safeguard only works if everyone uses it, and they don’t.

Where Thieves Actually Get the Picture

You do not have to fear a stranger with a rooftop camera. Most exposure happens in ways you would never think twice about. The big one is social media. Same goes for a shiny new car key photo. Just do not post them, period.

Then there is the valet. Handing over your whole key ring is risky, because your car registration is usually in the glove box, and that paper has your home address on it. If you want a physical block, key covers and sleeves are cheap. You can find silicone key caps for a few bucks at a hardware store or online, and they hide the cut edge of the blade. There are also key organizers, like the ones that tuck the blades inside a small case (think of a pocketknife that holds keys). Hackers who go to security conferences buy these on purpose to keep their bitting hidden, which tells you something. A basic one runs around $20 to $30. Nothing fancy, it just keeps the grooves out of view until you need them.

Locks That Photos Can’t Beat

If you want to actually shut this down, upgrade to a high-security lock with real key control. Brands like Medeco and Mul-T-Lock use patented key systems. To get a copy made, you need a special ID or magnetic card that came with the lock, and you can only get it done at an authorized dealer with a special machine. No hardware store, no kiosk, and definitely no website will cut one from a picture. The key blanks are legally restricted, so a photo of the cuts does not help a thief at all.

The trade-off is cost. A spare high-security key runs about $25 or more, versus a couple of bucks for a standard one, and the locks themselves cost more than a big-box deadbolt. But for a front door, a business, or a rental you own, that is money well spent. You are buying control over who can ever make a copy.

Bottom line, start treating your keys like the sensitive thing they are. Keep them out of photos and off public tables, cover the blades, hand the valet only what he needs, and think hard before posting that new-home shot.
