Your internet plan is probably fine. Your router hardware is probably fine. The room you shoved it into is what is wrecking your speeds, and most people pick the worst possible spot without thinking twice. The truth is blunt: an expensive router in a bad room usually loses to a cheap router in a good one. So here is every common hiding place ranked from the absolute worst room for your wifi to the one that actually earns its keep.
8. The Basement (The Worst Room In The House)
Nothing else comes close. Linksys flatly calls the basement the worst place to put a router, describing it as the lowest point in the home. The reason is physics you cannot argue with. Basements are wrapped in concrete, and concrete eats wifi. According to the ITU’s building attenuation figures, a concrete wall costs about 10 dB on the 2.4 GHz band and 13 dB on 5 GHz. Every floor the signal crosses costs another 5 dB or so in a wood-framed house, and a basement router reaching an upstairs bedroom crosses two of them. That is 20 dB gone before distance is even counted.
The numbers show up in real life fast. Twenty dB is not a rounding error. It is the gap between a stream that holds and one that stalls, and it lands hardest on the rooms furthest from the box. Move the router up to the ground floor, ideally near the middle of the house, and both floors usually improve at once. If your router lives in the basement, that is your whole problem.
7. The Kitchen
The kitchen is the basement’s biggest rival for worst room, and it earns the silver medal for pure interference. All West points out that your microwave runs on the 2.4 GHz band, the exact same frequency most routers and smart devices use. Every time you reheat leftovers, your microwave is essentially shouting over your router. Your refrigerator is no friend either. Then add everything else jammed into a modern kitchen: dishwashers (especially the wifi-enabled ones), smart toaster ovens, and coffee makers, all throwing off their own noise. On top of the electronics you have thick walls and bulky appliances physically blocking the signal’s path. A kitchen countertop feels convenient because there is an outlet right there, but you are dropping your router into the noisiest, most metal-packed room you own. Bad idea.
6. The Bathroom
Nobody brags about keeping their router in the bathroom, but plenty of people park it in a hall closet or shelf right next to one, and it is a quiet disaster. Water is one of wifi’s worst enemies because the signal simply does not pass through it well. 5. The Attic
People treat the attic like the basement’s opposite, figuring that up high must be good. It is not. Attics also sit far from the living spaces where you actually use your devices.

2. Behind the TV
The entertainment center feels like a smart home for a router, since your streaming devices are right there anyway. It backfires. That combination sits your router between an absorber and a mirror, and the signal has nowhere good to go.

Picture the light bulb again: dead center, it lights every room evenly. A living room shelf or a hall table near the middle of the home beats a top-tier router stuck in any of the rooms above.
Got a big house where even a perfect spot leaves a far bedroom weak? Run an Ethernet cable to a central room or add a mesh system with a node on each level so the signal starts fresh where you need it. Before you spend a dollar on a faster plan or a new router, though, just move the one you own to a central shelf on the main floor and watch what happens.
